Curated by David Grisman, Bare Bones is a collection of duo performances honoring the magic and exploring the foundation of Grisman and Garcia's studio works together. The compilation presents 51 tracks captured during the duo's intimate sessions at Grisman's home studio. It includes original, unembellished master recordings, alternate takes, and the first performances of classic tunes the duo recorded.
Volume I includes seven master takes released on Garcia/Grisman, Shady Grove, and Been All Around This World. The remaining 12 tracks, mostly from Not For Kids Only, were recorded as duos but were embellished with various instrumentation and are presented herein for the first time in their original unadorned state.
Volume II is comprised of unreleased original recorded versions of tunes that became staples of the Garcia/Grisman repertoire - "Grateful Dawg," Dawg's Waltz," and "Arabia." Also included are duo versions of other songs all subsequently arranged with bassist Jim Kerwin and multi-instrumentalist, Joe Craven -- "Two Soldiers," "Take Me," and the perennial Grateful Dead favorite, "Friend of the Devil."
Volume III assembles 16 alternate takes of duo recordings from their discography. Free from deadlines and full of inspiration, Jerry and David would often revisit songs across multiple sessions. While only one take could make the cut for any given album, these alternate takes showcase the duo's immense creativity and lust for new possibilities. As Dawg says in the closing liner notes, "...these recordings can be heard from a more historical (or should I say hysterical) perspective."

3枚のCDにびっしりと51曲が詰まっています。
ほとんどが、1分台から5分台の演奏で、アルバムタイトルのBare Bones Preludeというインスト演奏だけが12分です。
Bare Bonesという名称のアルバムは沢山あって、Bryan AdamsやWishbone Ashも出していますが、全て無関係、別物です。
意味は、最も基本的な事実や要素とか、必要最小限の機能などというニュアンスのようです。
オフィシャル解説の通り、装飾を取り去った素のままの演奏が収められています。
全て、聴いたことのある演奏なのですが、ほとんどが、Jerryのギターとグリスマンのマンドリンのみで、メインボーカルはJerryのみです。
中には、バンジョーとギター、バンジョーとマンドリンという演奏もありますが、基本的に2つの楽器を二人で演奏しています。
これが実に瑞々しく、新鮮です。
音は素晴らしくクリアで、まるで自分の部屋で、目の前で演奏してくれているかのようです。
要するに、実に気持ちよく、心地良い、素晴らしいアルバムです。
三枚のCDは、一枚目がMaster Takesと名付けられ、二枚目は、Other TunesとArrangements、三枚目がAlternate Takesとなっていて、複数のテイクが収められています。
個人的には、ヘビーローテーション、愛聴盤に決定しちゃいました。
