Dave's Picks Vol.53 Arrived
今年最初のGrateful DeadサブスクであるDave's Picks Vol.53です。
リリースが1月31日ですから、購入した皆さんの所へは、1ヶ月半ほど前に到着していると思います。
私への到着が大幅に遅れた理由ですが、実はサブスクに申し込むのをミスしてしまいました。
申し込んだつもりでいたのですが、Macのセキュリティソフトが、カード支払いの段階でストップさせていました。
すべて、確認漏れの自分のミスですが、ショックは大きかったです。
そんな訳で、今年は1品づつ注文する事になりました。
さて、DP53です。

Garcia still works wonders on the guitar. His obbligato behind rhythm guitarist Bob Weir's vocal on the gun-fighter ballad, "El Paso," ranged from flamenco figures to blues lines. The latter created a humorous and musically interesting mixture. Slipping around the sunny Mexican-American rhythms were the riffs and diving glissandos of a music that grew up among the chilly winds of Chicago. - Cliff Radel, Enquirer Pop Music Critic
The vocals and instruments blended perfectly into one cohesive unit. The artists themselves seemed to enjoy playing and the concentration they commanded was unshakable in the fan-filled Coliseum. - Douglas Fechter, The NewsRecord
Cincy, The Nati, Paris Of America, call it what you will but when the Grateful Dead came to town, they certainly helped propel her to "Queen of the West." The previously unreleased complete show from the Riverfront Coliseum, Cincinnati, OH 10/2/76 is all up from start to finish with xxx 70s-era first set songs like "Promised Land" and "El Paso" to Europe '72 staples and classic covers ("It's All Over Now," "Big River"), wrapped up with a unique second-set jam that opens with "Dancing In The Street" and closes with "Sugar Mag." An all-around good time!
Limited to 25,000 numbered copies and shipping this week, DAVE'S PICKS VOL. 53: RIVERFRONT COLISEUM, CINCINNATI, OH 10/2/76 was recorded by Dan Healy and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering.
P.S. As a bonus, we have a quintet of songs from 5/4/77 (recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson), the rest of which was featured on Dave’s Picks Vol. 50 and its Bonus Disc. As we mentioned in 2012 when this series started, we’re determined to provide complete shows whenever possible. And even when a show is only partially included on a release as bonus material, we’re happy to complete it later on down the line, as we’ve done here. We hope you dig it. - David Lemieux

ガルシアは相変わらずギターで素晴らしい仕事をしている。ガン・ファイターのバラード「El Paso」でのリズム・ギタリスト、ボブ・ウィアーのヴォーカルを支える彼のオブリガートは、フラメンコ的なものからブルース的なものまで幅広い。後者はユーモラスで音楽的に興味深いミクスチャーを生み出した。陽気なメキシコ系アメリカ人のリズムのまわりをすり抜けるのは、シカゴの冷たい風の中で育った音楽のリフとダイビング・グリッサンドだ。

今週出荷される25,000枚限定のDAVE'S PICKS VOL. 53: RIVERFRONT COLISEUM, CINCINNATI, OH 10/2/76」はダン・ヒーリーによって録音され、モッキンバード・マスタリングのジェフリー・ノーマンによってHDCD仕様にマスタリングされている。
追伸：
ボーナスとして、77年5月4日の5曲（ベティ・キャンター・ジャクソンによる録音）を収録しています
（残りの曲は『デイヴ・ピックス Vol.50』とそのボーナス・ディスクに収録）。
このシリーズが始まった2012年に述べたように、私たちは可能な限り完全なショウを提供することにこだわっています。
ボーナス・ディスクとして部分的にしか収録されていないショーであっても、今回のように後日完成させることが可能です。

1976年10月2日のRiverfront Coliseum Cincinnatiでの演奏。
録音はDan Healy。CD3の終わりに、1977年5月4日の演奏が5曲入っていて、これの録音はBetty Cantor-Jacksonです。
この5/4/77は上記でDavid Lemieuxが語っているように、DP50とボーナスディスクに入っていた日の補完版です。
リマスタリングは、お馴染みJeffrey Norman、
カバーアートは James Mazzaです。全体のデザインはいつものSteve Vanceですが、今回はアート部分をMazza Artに依頼したようです。Mazza Artは、Billy StringやPHISHのTreyのソロポスターなども手がけているようです。

この日は、9/23から始まったFall Tourの8日目で、9/30から10/3まで4日間連続公演（しかも毎日すべて会場が違う）の3日目でした。
76年のオフィシャルは32種類と結構発売されています。
1曲のみというのもあるので、コンプリートはそこまで多くはありません。
Daive's Picksでは、Vol.4/18/BounusCD2016/28/53と5種です。ちなみに先輩Dick's Picksは、20と33の2種のみです。

個人的感想です。
76年というと、ほぼ休業していた75年の翌年。Blues for Allahの発売や、Golden Gate Parkのフリーコンサートを経て、一皮剥けたというか、新境地のGrateful Deadという印象を持っています。
ちょっとJazzyな16ビートっぽいJamだったり、目新しさを感じる年です。
しかし、この10月2日は、76年というよりも77年に近い印象を受けます。
77年というと、完璧なアンサンブルと必要十分な実にまとまった演奏で、ビンテージイヤーと呼ぶ人もいる年ですが、それに近い印象です。まあ、3ヶ月後には77年という時期でもあります。
77年のように、まとまっていて、落ち着いて滑らかな演奏です。
特に特徴的に感じたのは、ユルさです。77年よりもユルいです。
この日のセットリストによる事もあると思います。
ファーストセットが特にユルくて、They Love Each Otherにスローテンポでなかなか魅力的なNew Minglewood Blues,名曲Row JimmyからEl Pasoにいって、さらにゆったりとTennessee Jedという具合です。
セットエンド近くのLet It Growでさえ、ハードな迫力というよりも、滑らかで心地よい演奏です。
これはセカンドセットにも継続していて、ほどよいThe Music Never Stoppedの後は、Candymanです。
魅力的だったのは、Samson and Delilahで、イントロのJamが長くて、次第に身体が揺れてくる感じです。
リラックスしたユルくていい雰囲気は継続してゆきます。
It Must Have Been the RosesやFriend of the Devil も演奏されます。
Dancinから生音の軽快なDrumsにいってからの静寂Jam、Philがちょっと出だしをミスったThe Other Oneもやはり軽快で、その後のサイレントなJamから、ゆっくりと入って来るStella Blueがこの日の個人的ハイライトでした。
尺を長く取って、Jerryのボーカルを味あわせてくれるバージョンです。
ソロもゆったりと伸びやかに演奏されます。
Grateful Deadの本質のひとつだと思っていますが、まったく気負わず、驚かそうとか、マウントを取ろうなどという意識は皆無で、かといって癒やしみたいな甘ったるさもありません。
肩肘張らず、リラックスして、ただただ演奏を楽しみ、楽しませるのみの幸せな時空間。
それを特に感じる演奏でした。
