2026年度の「Dave’s Picks」シリーズ第一弾であり、初公式リリースとなる完全収録音源、『DAVE'S PICKS VOL. 57: UPTOWN THEATRE, CHICAGO, IL (1978年2月1日)』。これを聴けば、誰もがこう思うはずです。「一体なぜ、これほどの名演が今までリリースされなかったんだ？」と。
かつての「Dick’s Picks」や初期の「Dave’s Picks」の候補リストにも名を連ねていたこの1978年2月1日の公演は、1977年と1978年という、グレイトフル・デッドにおける「異なるが互いを補完し合う2つの黄金時代」の架け橋となる、最高級のパフォーマンスが凝縮されています。
アップタウン・シアターでの記念すべき初公演となった本ステージは、大胆な探究心に満ちています。
第1セット： 「Jack Straw」「Friend Of The Devil」「Me And My Uncle」といった定番曲のモンスター級の演奏から、1977年5月を彷彿とさせる圧巻の「Sugaree」での締めくくりまで。
第2セット： ボビー（ボブ・ウィア）の力強い「Samson and Delilah」、リズム・デビルズによる「Drums > Space」の枠を超えたスペーシーでサイケデリックな即興、そしてジェリー（ガルシア）が音の隙間を埋め尽くすように奏でる情熱的なギター。
待った甲斐があったか？ もちろん、答えは「YES」です！さらに、1978年1月31日の第2セットも併せて収録。こちらも絶対に見逃せません。

We're confident that when you listen to DAVE'S PICKS VOL. 57: UPTOWN THEATRE, CHICAGO, IL (2/1/78), the first complete unreleased show in the 2026 Dave's Picks series, you'll ask why the heck did this take so long? On a short list for both Dick's Picks and an early Dave's Picks release, 2/1/78 exhibits countless examples of the very best of both 1977 and 1978, bridging two distinct yet complementary eras of the Grateful Dead’s music.
This very first Dead run at the Uptown is infused with bold exploration from the monster first set of classics ("Jack Straw, "Friend Of The Devil," "Me And My Uncle") with a "Sugaree" reminiscent of May '77 to close things out, from Bobby's powerful delivery of "Samson and Delilah," to the Rhythm Devils' spacey psychedelic improvisations beyond "Drums>Space" to Jerry's over-the-top notes filling in every nook and cranny of the second set. Was it worth the wait? You betcha! Also, not to be missed? The 2nd set from 1/31/78. We've laid that out on this one as well.
Limited to 25,000 numbered copies, DAVE'S PICKS VOL. 57: UPTOWN THEATRE, CHICAGO, IL (2/1/78) was recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering.

2/1/78コンプリートと、1/31/78のファーストセットクローザーの長尺Let It Growと、1/31/78セカンドセット丸ごとが入っています。
CD1の10曲名にアンコールのAround and Around、そして11曲目に1/31のLet It Growが入っていて、CD3には、1/31セカンドセット丸ごとが入っています。
こんな面倒な事をしたのは、CDの容量目一杯に音源を詰め込みたかったためでしょう。

1978年は、年間80回のショーを行っています。
77年12月の4日間のWinterlandでのNew Years Eveの後、開けて1月6日から22日までNew Years Run11公演。
1/22にEugeneで1回ショーを行って、1/30から5日まで6回のショー。
この音源は、そのうち1/30から2/1までシカゴのUptown Theatreで行った3連続ショーのちょうど半分が収録されているという訳です。
ちなみに、この1月にBobbyのソロ、Heaven Help The Foolがリリースされています。
その後は、4月のスプリングツアーまでショーはありません。
9/14から16には、エジプトツアーを行って、Rocking The Cradle: Egypt 1978に部分収録されています。
11/11には、NBCスタジオでSaturday Night LiveでTV出演。
11/15には、8月からレコーディングしていたShakedown Streetをリリースしています。
そして12月31日には、DVDにもなったThe Closing of Winterlandとなります。

脂が乗って、若いパワーに熟練がミックスしてくる最高の年齢ですね。
Jerryは、73年にDoug Irwinから受け取ったスペシャルギターWolf の最終年で、翌79年からは同じくDoug Irwin作のTigerとなります。
Bobbyは、インレイだらけのIbanezのCowboy Fancy、Philは、Guild Star FireをAlembicのRon Wickershamが電子回路を大改造したボリュームだらけの怪物ベースBig Brownを弾いています。
KeithとDonnaは、翌79年2月にバンドを去り、4月にBrentが入りますから、実質ラストイヤーです。
2/1の演奏時間は休憩を除くトータルで2時間20分で、結構タイトで短くなっています。
音質ですが、Charlie Miller氏が2012年にシェアしてくれた手持ちのShnID：123059の1/31と比べてみました。

ノイズが入る部分が同じですので、Betty Cantor-Jacksonさんによる同じBetty音源がソースだと思います。
一聴すると遜色ないですが、ドラムの抜けやベースの締まりがオフィシャルの方が良いと感じます。
Let It Growでは、残念ながら左チャンネルにチリチリというノイズと音が歪む部分が続きますが、オフィシャルでは、完全除去とは行きませんが、かなり低くノイズが抑えられています。

独断偏見の私はこう感じたという個人的感想を少し
まとまりと完成の77年の翌年です。
肩の力がさらに抜けて、より自由になってリラックスしてると感じます。
音の密度が程よく薄まり、隙間が多めで、それが心地よいです。
Bobbyの音が、シャリシャリで剃刀みたいですが、これ以上はやらない方が良いというギリギリの攻めた音作りで、これはなかなか良いです。
Jerryの音は、突き抜けるクリアさというよりは、滑らかでとてもスムーズです。
Philのベースは、余韻を排したとてもタイトな音です。
硬い芯は無く、もちろん柔らかすぎず、惚れ惚れする音です。
ドラムのバランスは少し引き気味で要所は押さえたもの。手数は多いです。やっぱり若さの勝利かなと思います。
Keithのピアノはとても控えめですが重要です。
この隙間多めで、それまでとは異なるアンサンブルをヘッドフォンで大きめに聴いていると、Jam部分で、ふわりと持っていかれそうになります。
心地よい浮遊感に身を任せていると、頭の中が真っ白になって、マジカルなひと時が訪れました。
Sugaree、ヤバいです。ドラムとピアノが違うリズムを演奏しているかのようで、それにギターがまた違うリズムで絡み、それらが異次元なアンサンブルになります。
Jerryはもちろんですが、Bobbyのギターが最高です。
2/1のセカンドセットのSamson And Delilah、パワフルです。
Bobbyのサイドが光るIt Must Have Been The Rosesの後のEstimated ProphetからラストのSugar Magnoliaまで切れ目なく続く至福の旅が待っています。
EstimatedラストのJam、アカペラパートが堪らないHe's Gone、Drumsの後のベースソロからのフリーJamと聴きどころ満載です。
